Venerable Fr. Varghese Payapilly.
The Founder of the congregation of the Sisters of the Destitute

Fr. Varghese Payapilly, founder of our congregation was born in 1876 in Kerala in the District of Ernakulam, Kochi. He had an urge to live for the poor and the marginalized. However the Lord called him to be a worthy instrument in his hands. He was ever ready to do the will of God and thus he became a priest in the year 1907. He was the manager of a well known school- “ St Mary’s School” Aluva in Ernakulam, Kerla. He proved himself as a prominent educator through his gentle and humanitarian approach to the students and parents. He imparted moral values to them which had a great influence in the humane-socio-cultural life of the society. At this time he discerned the will of God to start a congregation where the old age people can be looked after with the tender love of Jesus. “As you did to the least of these my brethren you did it to me” - these words from the Bible inspired him to see Jesus in all the poor people. Thus the congregation of the Sisters of the Destitute was founded in the year 1927. He went to the abode of Heaven in 1929. Now the process of declaring him as a saint is on move. Through his intercession we can pray for the sick and ailing, those who are in debt, those who prepare for the examinations etc. Venerable Fr. Varghese payapilly, pray for us
